Planet Earth is a fascinating place. However, its fragile beauty has never been more apparent than it is now, and there is growing concern about its health, because of the massive influence that man has had on the planet. We have not only impacted on many facets of the Earth, but we are also compromising our own future, since we ultimately depend on nature. We therefore face a huge challenge – that of learning to manage Earth Systems in a way that safeguards the integrity of the planet, whilst meeting the needs of people. What is urgently required is a broad approach that focuses on the big picture. Earth Systems is one such emerging interdisciplinary field of study, which studies our planet in an integrated and holistic way.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Earth Systems focuses on the various systems operating on Planet Earth, their dynamics, and the implications for humans, and is being offered for the third consecutive year in October 2013. The course looks at the different physical components of the planet and interactions between these, whilst framing issues of environmental change within the wider context of environmental, social, economic and cultural sustainability. Earth Systems is a rapidly developing area of study, and this course is at the forefront of developments in the field. The programme of studies is particularly novel within the Maltese context, where there is a pressing need for such training, given the extent of human pressures on the environment.

The programme will run over three years of full-time study, and brings together theory and practice in both science and management. Learning methods include lectures, fieldwork sessions, laboratory sessions, interactive workshop sessions as well as discussion seminars. Graduates of the programme will have the opportunity to pursue careers in several fields including environment, planning and resource management, with the possibility of joining organizations in private, public and non-governmental sectors, both locally and internationally.
