We encourage all our students, and first-years in particular, to download the latest edition of the Institute of Earth Systems
Student Handbook intended as a guide to support them during their studies and to enable them to approach their work in an effective way.
The handbook's introductory section provides a brief overview of the Institute of Earth Systems, and outlines the code of conduct expected of our students. This is followed by a chapter presenting guidelines on study methods and activities, which aims to assist students in developing and applying effective learning strategies. The next sections focus on assignments and examinations (including tips for effective communication and delivery), and on dissertations and research projects, all of which are key components of a course of study. Information on academic and social support structures follows, and the handbook concludes with a summing up of the various communication tools available to students.
