The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in partnership with the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) and in collaboration with the Institute of Earth Systems, organized an Expert Meeting on Resource Efficiency: Economics and Outlook for the Arab Region between 24 and 26 June 2013. This event, held at the University of Malta's Valletta campus, had the objective of scoping and developing a framework for a regional assessment of resource efficiency. The meeting provided a platform for further capacity building in this area and for the exchange of experiences between participating experts. Key thematic areas addressed included water, energy, biodiversity, food security, waste and tourism.

Participants spanned a wide range of countries including Egypt, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Tunisia, Burkina Faso and Lebanon. In addition to CEDARE and UNEP, institutions represented included the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (UN-ESCWA), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the Centre International de Recherche Agronomique en Developpement (CIRAD), the World Green Building Council, and SWEEP-Net, together with various universities from the region. University of Malta academics from the Institute of Earth Systems, the Faculty of the Built Environment and the Institute for Sustainable Energy also participated in the meeting.

This was the first event co-organized by the recently-established Mediterranean Regional Office of CEDARE which is based at the Institute of Earth Systems of the University of Malta.
