Research findings in the field of climate change were the focus of the 2nd World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation held at the University of Coimbra, Portugal in September 2017. In an address to the plenary session of the Symposium, Dr Charles Galdies highlighted the need to effectively communicate the true risks of sea-level rise to the coastal communities of small islands, and presented research showing how 3D visualisations can help to encourage actions related to climate change adaptation.

Climate change and related trends at both local and regional level is one of the principal areas in which the Institute of Earth Systems conducts research. The main themes of this research include:

  • using and improving climate and weather prediction models
  • documenting and assessing impacts from extreme weather and climate change on the health, agriculture, tourism, aviation, biodiversity, and coastal environment sectors
  • gauging climate change literacy and beliefs, and  communication of climate change impacts
  • reconstruction of past climates from pollen records in sediments
Over recent years, the Institute has built a knowledge-base in this field, consisting of a range of scholarly publications as well as students’ dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Students and researchers interested in the study of climate change and its impacts are invited to browse this material, and to contact Dr Charles Galdies with any queries.
