MECO: Bases for the integrated sustainable management of Mediterranean sensitive coastal ecosystems

EU Fourth Framework Programme, IC-CT98-0270, 1998-2001

MECO focused on selected sandy beaches in Morocco, Tunisia and Malta. The MECO approach involved the scientific description of system elements and the development of management recommendations. The project tackled issues of scale, seeking integration between the different spatial scales of system elements, as well as integration between different disciplinary approaches. Through its dissemination manual, the MECO project results were made available to affected stakeholders.

Further details of the MECO project can be accessed here or by contacting the Institute’s Division of Environmental Management and Planning.

An audio-visual package based on MECO project findings was subsequently produced by the International Centre of Science and High Technology (ICS) within the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in collaboration with the International Environment Institute, the University of Florence and the European Union, and produced with the permission of MECO partners. Details of this audio-visual package, which is available in four languages (Arabic, English, French and Italian), are available here.
