Journal_Cover_2015A paper authored by Mevrick Spiteri and Daniel Borg in the third issue of the Journal of Baroque Studies, published by the International Institute for Baroque Studies, was awarded the “MHS Emerging Scholarly Article for 2016” by the Malta Historical Society.

Their landmark paper is titled “The formation of the architect-engineer, perito and agrimensore, and their regulation by the Order of St John in eighteenth century Malta.” This 45-page study provides an in-depth study on the historical formation of these professions within the context of Malta’s Baroque Landscape. It defines their roles and traces the tasks they carried out on various buildings and landscape development under the influence of the Order of St. John from the mid-1650s to the end of the 1700s.

The publication award was presented to the two scholars during an event held at the Mdina Cathedral Museum after which they presented a brief overview on the role of architect-engineers and agrimensori in the shaping of the Maltese landscape. The event was followed by the launch of a book titled “España, Malta y el Mediterráneo: papers presented by Spanish scholars during the proceedings of History Week 2013 2nd colloquium on Spanish-Maltese History.”

The Journal of Baroque Studies is a peer-reviewed publication, published annually by the International Institute for Baroque Studies at the University of Malta. Click here for more information on the Journal of Baroque Studies.
