Shaping Values and Attitudes through PE and Sport was the theme for the IPES Conference 2018 held on Wednesday, 21st February 2018 at the Sports Complex, Institute for PE and Sport, University of Malta.  The Conference was organised by the Institute for PE and Sport, University of Malta in collaboration with Maltese Association for Physical Education (MAPE);  Ministry for Education and Employment: Centre for Physical Education and Sport;  Secretariat for Catholic Education: Physical Education;  and SportMalta. 


Special guests for the Conference were Hon. Dr Clifton Grima MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Youth and Voluntary Organizations, within the Ministry of Education and Hon. Mr Ryan Callus MP, Opposition Spokesperson for Youth, Sport & the Fight against Obesity.  Keynote speech entitled “PE/Sport as a Vehicle for Positive Youth Development” was delivered by Dr Rachel Sandford, Loughborough University, UK.  The word of welcome was delivered by Dr Andrew Decelis, IPES Director and MAPE President, followed by the speeches of the guests; and then the keynote speech by Dr Sandford.  This year there was record of 180 participants being IPES Students, PE teachers from all schooling sectors and coaches from different sport disciplines.


The second part of the conference comprised of 8 different workshops followed by a plenary session with an open discussion entitled “Values and Attitudes through PE and Sport- Sharing of Good Practice” with the participation of different expertise in the areas of Value laden PE; integrating PE and Religion; Sports events and the values they impart; and promoting values through coaching. 







IPES Awards were then given out:

Nicholas Sciberras was awarded the Dr Michael Aquilina Award for outstanding performance in the B.Ed (Honours) PE Course (2013-2017). 

Karl Attard was awarded the Mr Louis Borg Award for outstanding performance in the PE Units (2013-2017); and

Maria Mifsud was awarded the IPES Director Award for outstanding performance in BSc (Honours) in Sport and Active Lifestyles, Evening Part-time Degree Course (2012-2017). 


IPES and MAPE, together with all the conference participants honoured the memory of two PE teachers Erika Camilleri (1974-2017) and Sabrina Carabott (1981-2017) and an IPES Student and National Athlete, Gerald DeGaetano (1965-2018). €160 were collected in their honour and were donated to Puttinu Cares Foundation.
