Staff Sporting Opportunities

The Institute for PE and Sport (IPES) offers a range of sporting opportunities providing staff the chance to learn a new sport, improve their skills, and meet new staff. So if you’ve always wanted to try out volleyball, football, basketball and handball, have a bash at badminton and squash or start again with table tennis, then you easily can! Let your chosen sport discipline be about the joy of playing, learning a new skill, meeting new people, getting active and having fun.

IPES would like to hear from all members of the University committee to come up with ideas regarding other sporting activities that are not currently offered.

Kindly click on the following activities to acquire further information:

The Squash Court booking system is now online. The University squash courts are available for use by University staff on working days, for 45-minute sessions starting at 12:00 or 12:45.

Squash Ladder participants can use this facility to book a court for ladder challenges, or to make a 'provisional' booking to play a friendly match or do some training. Note that provisional bookings may be cancelled for you if the court is required for a squash ladder challenge. A 24-hour notice will be given if a provisional booking is cancelled and an email will be sent to you to inform you of the cancellation. Therefore, if there is less than 24 hours left, you can assume that the provisional court booking is confirmed.

Kindly note also that:

- At any one time, each member of staff can have only one booking challenge/provisional booking in place.

- All bookings are always subject to the courts not being required for use by IPES for the needs of this academic sports dept. In the event that IPES would need to use the courts, an email notification will be sent to you as early as possible.

You may follow the link below to access the booking system:

The introductory squash sessions that were previously organized were well attended. These are mainly targeted for beginners, but those staff who have played a bit of squash already, or who have already attended previous introductory sessions, would also be welcome to come along.

For introductory squash session bookings and any other bookings for students or third parties during office hours, kindly e-mail Oliver Mallia, Sports Manager on

Volleyball tournaments in aid of charity are held on an annual basis.

The IPES team won the first two editions of the University Staff Volleyball Tournament. The finals are generally followed by a reception and a presentation where the winning team, runners up and all participating teams (generally around 11 teams in total) from the different departments are awarded the cups and medals accordingly.  More importantly a cheque is presented to a representative of the chosen charitable institution.

Anyone interested in partcipating or booking a volleyball court should kindly email Oliver Mallia, Sports Manager on

IPES also organises staff 5-a-side football leagues in aid of charity annually with an average participation of 8 teams with the last two editions being won by IPES and Administration.

If you are interested to join in, kindly inform Oliver Mallia, Sports Manager on

Table Tennis and Badminton

Two badminton courts and table tennis tables are also available for use by University members of staff.

For further information kindly contact Oliver Mallia, Sports Manager on

Walking Club

The Institute for PE and Sport would like to announce the creation of a walking club.

Come explore a number of pleasant trails on and around the campus that include distance and estimated time to complete. We plan to walk for 30-45 minutes over lunch time to get to know other staff members in the university community.

We hope you will bring your comfortable shoes and join us!

If you would like to learn more information about the walking club, kindly contact Oliver Mallia, Sports Manager on
