The Student Athlete Support Programme (SASP) was first launched at the University of Malta in the academic year 2017/8 and following UM's participation in an Erasmus + project with other European universities during the previous two years.
The programme is aimed at supporting student-athletes studying at undergraduate level at UM whilst at the same time competing in a sporting discipline at national and/or international level. The ultimate aim is to provide student-athletes with the possibility of striking a balance between their academic and sporting commitments and consequently excel, to the best of their abilities, in both.
Selected student-athletes are assigned a sport mentor who is normally their first point of contact. S/he would be able to assist with any matters the student-athlete may be concerned with throughout the course of their studies at UM. This includes matters of an academic and/or administrative nature such as clashes with international competition and examinations, clashes of lectures with training, distribution of workload and time management.
Student-athletes registered on SASP can now make use of the services of a professional sport psychologist. These sessions are free and are being carried out online on a one-to-one basis. Student-athletes are being encouraged to make use of this service as and when they feel the need to. This service is strictly confidential and those interested are being urged to contact Dr Muscat directly via email.
