TITLE Introduction to Sport and Physical Activity Management

DESCRIPTION Managing sport has never been more challenging, or more rewarding. As the value and profile of sport continue to grow, so do the opportunities for a fulfilling career in sports management. Throughout this study-unit, participants will get to the heart of what makes sport special, and why both governments and commercial enterprises seek to promote participation. A definition of the field of sport and leisure management and an introduction to various management schools of thought will be presented in this unit. The roles of the sport manager and what makes a successful sport manager will also be discussed.

Participants will explore the need for effective management capabilities, including planning, managing people and events, risk management and marketing, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to put these into practice. It will discuss the roles of the sports manager and the management approaches within all sport management sectors.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to engage the participants in examining the context for the increasing emphasis in quality systems and procedures in Sport and Leisure Management. A series of operational challenges exist in this field and these can be witnessed from real case-study presentations of facilities, clubs, administrators and other industry stakeholders who can provide suggestions for improvement based on contemporary industry and government policies and practices.

Human resources management, risk management, child protection and ethics are important elements in Sport and Leisure Management which together with the differences between leadership and management will be highlighted in the study-unit.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the main duties and roles of sports managers and how the most appropriate leadership style can be adopted;
- Describe risk management and its importance in the role of a sport manager;
- Compare a different range of theoretical and practical perspectives of management;
- Demonstrate the characteristics and objectives of, and relationships between, the public, private and voluntary sectors in relation to leisure and sports provision;
- Explain the diverse factors that influence the value of, and access to leisure and sport for individuals and communities.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Compare different approaches and styles of management;
- List any hazards in their sports environment;
- Analyze the importance of leisure and sport as social, cultural, political and economic phenomena of human behaviour;
- Demonstrate leadership and management skills in given tasks;
- Plan and organise sports and fund-raising events in various settings including clubs and the community;
- Promote good practice in sports;
- Recognise poor practice, abuse and bullying in sport;
- Respond to disclosure, suspicions and allegations of abuse in sport.
