TITLE Introduction to Research, Writing and Study Skills

DESCRIPTION University study requires a range of skills in academic reading and writing. During this study-unit, students will be guided through research and library skills, writing skills and techniques working towards a write up on a topic of interest in the field of sport and physical activity. Emphasis is placed on how to use available literature in order to gain relevant information that is needed in order to engage in further research.

This unit will therefore tackle issues such as: the importance of conducting a literature review; the basic steps of conducting a review of available literature; writing essays and literature reviews; quoting and paraphrasing; compiling a reference list; and how to avoid plagiarism and collusion. Students will also be taught how to manage their studies and their time effectively, to identify their own learning style and about personal responsibility and motivation.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to familiarise students with academic writing and the use of relevant literature in scholarly writing. It will also seek to guide students to plan their work during the course.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to research a topic and effectively use literature to strengthen arguments in academic writing;
- Identify the main sources of literature in the field of physical activity and sport;
- Identify their own learning style.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively locate, record, and use literature in their own writing (both assignments and dissertation);
- Effectively take notes and study;
- Work with others;
- Write in concise English, using own words, but acknowledging other sources where appropriate;
- Read and write critically;
- Quote and reference in a correct way.
