IT Services offers web hosting for departmental, staff and project websites.

Departmental Websites

The University website, including departmental websites, is maintained through the University Web Content Management System (CMS). The Web CMS facilitates the publishing, editing and modifying of web content through a simple web-based interface. The University Web CMS is Squiz Matrix.

Departmental websites are set up using the standard University template. Staff are to adhere to the Web Editorial Board’s standards and policies when populating departmental websites.

If a new departmental website needs to be set up, IT Services can prepare a template for the new department on the Web CMS and grant editing rights to the staff who will be responsible for updating the website. The Dean / Head of Department / Director should contact IT Services and provide the following information:

  • The official name of the new department
  • The suggested URL for the new department (refer to the Web Editorial Board’s URL policies)
  • The names of staff who will have editing rights to prepare and maintain the website.

IT Services provides workshops, documentation and support to assist departments with the use of the Web CMS.

When the website has been populated, the department should contact the Web Editorial Board so that the process for taking the website live can be initiated.

More information about setting up departmental websites is available.

Staff Websites

Staff may wish to set up a personal website to showcase their research. IT Services offers two options for setting up staff websites:

  • A website on the University Web CMS (refer to this example). IT Services provides workshops, documentation and support to assist staff with the use of the Web CMS.
  • Web hosting on the University web servers. If staff prefer to design and build the website themselves, IT Services can provide HTML hosting. Staff should consult with IT Services if they have specific hosting requirements.

To apply for a staff website, fill in the UM IT Web Account for Staff [PDF] form and forward it to the IT Services Reception Desk.

Note that teaching and learning resources related to study-units should not be uploaded on staff personal websites. These resources should be uploaded in the UM VLE.

Project Websites

Staff coordinating the setup of a website for a University-related project are advised to contact IT Services to discuss their requirements. IT Services can assist staff with the following:

  • Drafting technical specifications for the provision of the design and development of the project website
  • Evaluating technical specifications offered by suppliers
  • Providing hosting on the University servers for websites based on the WordPress CMS.

It is important that staff consult IT Services before proceeding with procurement procedures related to web design and development services.
