Data Access

The University of Malta is the controller of all data (including emails, appointments and other calendar listings, contact details & documents) within the University of Malta domain. Google employees only access the domain when given express permission to do so by the University for purposes, such as in the event of troubleshooting.

Google scans emails for the purpose of virus and spam protection. The scanning procedures are automated and involve no human interaction.

Data Protection

Data held by Google can be located at any of Google's globally spread high security data centres (the Google Security Whitepaper [PDF] gives details of the protections in place to secure access). Under the Data Protection Act, the transfer of personal data outside the EU is permissible upon the application of the ’EU-US Privacy Shield Framework’. The University of Malta's contract with Google meets the requirement of adherence to the Privacy Shield Framework, and the adequacy and security requirements of the EU Data Protection Directive.

Data is processed by Google in accordance with the Google Privacy Policy.


Unlike the consumer version of Google services, there shall be no advertising for staff or students within G Suite for Education. Advertising will only be visible by Users when using the Google search engine and other consumer services.

Google however reserves the right to display advertising for alumni. Hence, once students graduate and are no longer current students, they may see advertising within the G Suite for Education services.

Intellectual Property Rights

Google shall not acquire any right, title, or interest in any Intellectual Property Rights belonging to the University of Malta or its students, staff and alumni.
