1. What is the UM SSO?

The University of Malta Single Sign-On (SSO) enables staff and students to access different UM services (e.g. Webmail, eSIMS, AIMS, VLE, eJournals etc.) by signing in once using their UM IT Account username and password.

Once signed in, you will not be prompted to retype your username and password again to access other UM services during the same browser session. Similarly, signing out from one UM service will automatically stop access to other UM services.

The UM SSO also provides access to notifications/alerts from the various UM information systems.

More information and instructions about the UM SSO.

2. I do not have a University username and password

Students registered at the University of Malta or the Junior College are required to activate their UM IT Account in order to acquire a University username and password. Activation of the UM IT Account requires use of the activation code. This code appears on the letter of acceptance sent to all students at the beginning of their course. Students who have misplaced their acceptance letter should send an email to the relevant office with valid identification (ID Card/Passport and mobile number) to be provided with their activation code:

  • UM students who have applied with 'Local' qualifications (e.g. Matriculation Certificate, International Baccalaureate and European Baccalaureate etc.) and Alumni should send an email to the Local Admissions Office
  • UM students who have applied with 'Overseas' qualifications (e.g. GCE Advanced and Advanced Subsidiary Examinations, Diploma di Esame di Stato, VWO Diploma etc.) should send an email to the International Admissions Office
  • JC students should send an email to the Student Services Office.

Staff at the University of Malta or the Junior College are required to activate their UM IT Account in order to acquire a University username and password. Activation of the UM IT Account requires the use of the activation code that is issued by the Office for Human Resources Management & Development at the start of their employment. If the activation code is not available, staff should send an email to the Office for Human Resources Management & Development to be provided with their activation code.

3. I forgot my password

You can find instructions on the procedure to follow if you have forgotten your password.

4. My password does not seem to be working

Remember that the password field is case-sensitive, so make sure to use the correct capitalisation. You will be notified if Caps Lock is on while typing your password.

It is also possible that the username is incorrect. Remember that the username is not your email address (i.e. it should not contain '@um.edu.mt' or '@jc.um.edu.mt'). Usernames always follow the format below:

Students
jbor0001
Staff
jbor1 OR jborg01

5. I have a problem with my device and cannot access the TFA verification code

You can use either any backup devices you may have set up or the backup codes as another form of verification. This can be done by selecting Choose another method to get a verification code.

If you do not have access to these, you need to repeat the account activation process with the aid of the activation code given to you by the HRMD (staff) or found with your acceptance letter (students).

The account activation process will let you change your primary contact number, set up the smartphone authenticator and/or a backup device, and also lets you generate backup codes.

If you have misplaced your activation code, you should send an email to the respective office with valid identification (ID Card/Passport and mobile number) to be provided with your activation code:

6. How do I know that I signed in to SSO?

When you sign in, your name and surname will be displayed at the top-right of the screen. If you have more than one type of UM IT Account (for example, you are both staff and a student of the University), the type of account is shown next to your name. In the case of a role account, only the name of the account is displayed.

More information about Signing In.

7. I have signed in using SSO but I cannot access a particular service or webpage

You are only able to access services which you have permissions to. Make sure that you are signed in with the correct UM IT Account, since you may have access to the particular service via a different account which you are assigned to. If so:

  • Sign out from the current UM IT Account by clicking the Sign Out link found at the top-right of the page.
  • Sign in again using the correct UM IT Account.
If you still cannot access your account, kindly contact the relevant Helpdesk.

8. I have signed out of a service and was signed out of all services

When you click on the Sign Out link, you are not just signing out of the particular service which you are currently using, but you are signing out of the SSO system. Therefore, access will be revoked from all other UM services.

9. I have another error or problem

If you have another query regarding SSO or signing in, kindly contact the relevant Helpdesk.
