Sextortion Scam

26 Jul 2018

IT Services is receiving reports that some users received an email scam claiming that they have viewed pornography and are being requested to make a payment (often via crypto-currency like Bitcoin) to keep this from becoming public.

The email makes reference to a real password used by the recipients making it more convincing for the recipients to believe that their device has been hacked. This password could be the one that they have used / are using to access the University online services (refer to the sample text of this scam).

IT Services reassures its users that its systems have not been hacked. The passwords have been acquired through compromised password databases of third party online services. Some staff, for example, have used their University email address and password when setting up their LinkedIn account. In 2012, the passwords of 6.5 million user accounts on LinkedIn were stolen.

If you are using the University password to access third party online services (e.g. LinkedIn, Amazon, eBay etc), please make arrangements to change the University password at your earliest.

Although the University web services are protected with Two Factor Authentication (TFA), we recommend that you change your password periodically anyway.

To change the University password:
  1. Visit the University of Malta homepage.
  2. Click Staff (top left).
  3. Click UM IT Account.
  4. Click Manage Account.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to change your password.

If you have received this scam email, do not reply and just ignore it.

For assistance please contact the IT Services Helpdesk.

UM VLE Upgrade

23 Jul 2018

The annual upgrade of the UM VLE will take place between Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th August. Thus, the UM VLE will not be available on these days. The UM VLE will be made available again on Thursday 9th August. We apologise for any inconvenience, and will endeavour to complete the upgrade as soon as possible.

The upgrade to Moodle 3.5 will feature an enhanced look-and-feel of the VLE interface. The new theme is based on the recently renovated UM website, and gives the VLE a fresh and modern look. The theme is responsive, hence it offers optimal user experience across various devices including tablets and smartphones. Navigation within a VLE study-unit area has improved significantly and more screen space has been made available for your study material and activities.

While the resources and activities are similar to the current VLE, the Moodle 3.5 upgrade introduces new features, bug fixes and enhancements that will improve the VLE user experience. Further information will be provided in due course.
