The University has a site licence for ArcGIS desktop. The licence covers use of ArcGIS for academic purposes. The software is available for University staff and students.

The current version available from IT Services is ArcGIS 10.8. Manuals can be accessed online.

Use of ArcGIS on personal computers/laptops requires use of OpenVPN.

  • Operating System: Microsoft® Windows 8.x (32-bit and 64-bit versions) or Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit versions)
  • Processor: 2.2 GHz or higher, Hyper-threading (HHT) or Multi-core recommended
  • Memory: 4GB or higher
  • Minimum free drive space: 4GB
  • Graphics adapter: NVIDIA, ATI or INTEL chipset with 64 MB RAM minimum, 256 MB RAM or higher recommended
  • Network adapter running the TCP/IP network protocol.

Current students and staff can install ArcGIS Desktop software on one computer free of charge. The software can be transferred from one computer to another as required, but it cannot be installed on more than one computer at a time. Contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

Download and installation  instructions for ArcGIS 10.8 are available.

Upgrades are normally made available during the summer recess. A notification will be displayed in the IT Services News & Events section when an upgrade is released.

To upgrade your ArcGIS installation, remove the old version of ArcGIS software from your computer and then follow the installation instructions found in the 'Installation' section (above) to install the latest available version.

The software licence is renewed centrally and no action is required from the user side.

Note: OpenVPN expires yearly and needs to be renewed in order to keep using ArcGIS away from the campus network.
