NVivo is a software package for managing and analysing qualitative data, such as interview transcripts, field notes, images and videos.
The University has a site licence for NVivo software. The licence covers use of NVivo for academic purposes. The software is available only for University staff and students.
The current NVivo version available from IT Services is NVivo 12.
NVivo 12 for Windows
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 or later
Hardware: 1.2 GHz single-core processor (32-bit) or 1.4 GHz single-core processor (64-bit) or faster
Memory: 2GB RAM or more recommended
Minimum free drive space: 5GB (additional hard-disk space may be required for NVivo projects)
XGA (1024x768) or a higher-resolution monitor
Browser: Internet Explorer 11 or Google Chrome 44 or later.
NVivo 12 for Mac
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or later
Hardware: Intel Core 2 Duo or higher
Memory: 4GB RAM or more recommended
Minimum free drive space: 3GB or more recommended
Display 1280 x 800 or a higher-resolution monitor
Browser: Google Chrome 44 or later.
A charge is levied for every NVivo installation or licence code renewal. NVivo licensing is based on fixed expiration dates.
February - August
The above charges cover NVivo upgrades released during the licence period. A notification will be displayed in the IT Services News & Events when an upgrade is released. Upgrades may only be provided for licences having 3 or more months left before expiry.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, arrangements can be made for students and staff to use NVivo on their personal computers. For further information or urgent requests contact IT Service Desk.
Payment for new or renewal of NVivo licence can be made as follows.
Personal online payment – Staff and students can pay onlineusing any accepted credit/debit card. Academic Work Resource Fund debit cards are also accepted. NVivo can be downloaded and activated using the unique licence key sent by email within one working day following the online payment.
Journal transfer payment – Departments are requested to send a completed Journal Request Form to IT Services Reception Desk to order NVivo. Following clearance of journal transfer, staff will be required to sign the NVivo academic licence terms and conditions. NVivo can be downloaded and activated using the unique licence key sent by email.
