IT Services has a number of laptops available for short-term loans for University-related work. Currently the laptop loaning service is available only to University staff with a UM IT account. 

There is no charge for this service, although sanctions may be imposed for overdue laptops or non-returned items.

The laptop loan service is meant to provide staff with a substitute unit when their computer is unavailable such as when this is being repaired. Laptops cannot be loaned for extended periods (e.g. for a semester).

The laptops have the following software installed:

  •   Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  •   Firefox, Internet Explorer & Chrome
  •   Adobe Acrobat Reader
  •   Media Players such as Media Player 11, Quicktime and Realplayer 10.5

Any additional software installed by the borrower must be legal and licensed. The laptops are being provided for University-related work otherwise there will be a breach of the academic licensing terms of the software installed in laptops.

All laptops support wireless connections.

Laptops will be issued in a bag containing a power lead and charger.


Loan Procedure

The laptops are available on a first come, first served basis for short periods. Reservations should be made by completing the laptop booking request form. IT Services will send an email confirming availability of laptop and date when the laptop can be picked up.

When staff collect laptops from IT Services Helpdesk, they will be required to sign the Laptop Loan Agreement form acknowledging the terms and conditions of this service. As soon as a staff member borrows a laptop s/he will be responsible for the equipment until this is returned to IT Services.

Borrowed laptops must be returned to IT Services Helpdesk on the agreed date as indicated in the Laptop Loan Form. All staff are encouraged to respect laptop return dates so that IT Services can prepare laptops for the next borrowers. Returned laptops shall be subject to a visual inspection to check their condition. Staff must ensure that they have removed all data from the laptop before they return this to IT Services.
