IT Services manages a number of wireless hotspots in designated areas on campus. The service enables University of Malta (UM) staff, students and visitors to connect to the campus network using laptops and other devices that support wireless connections.

The wireless network service provides UM staff and students access to:
  • online information available on the University intranet, including the Library e-journals, eSIMSUM VLE and Internet.
  • email.
  • IT Services printing facilities.

Connecting to the Wireless Network

Users are prompted to select their status at the University of Malta when their laptop or mobile device connects to the University wireless network.

  • University staff and students are required to configure eduroam on their laptops and mobile devices to connect to the University wireless network. Information about eduroam and instructions to configure devices to connect via eduroam are available:
  • Visitors coming from eduroam participating institutions are required to configure eduroam on their laptop and mobile devices before they arrive in Malta.
  • Visitors with a guest UM IT Account can connect to the University wireless network through the browser-based service. Once connected to the wireless access point, visitors can start using the service by first launching a web browser, choosing the visitor option, and authenticating using the provided username and password.

Wireless for Visitors

University staff may request temporary wireless accounts for visitors who do not have eduroam or a UM IT Account by sending an email to the IT Services Helpdesk. Temporary wireless accounts may be issued for one day, seven days, or fourteen days.

Departments with frequent visitors may contact us to be provided with a few accounts that will be readily available to issue to their visitors.

These temporary wireless accounts are not intended for events such as conferences etc. Requests for wireless accounts for events should be directed to the Conferences and Events Unit.

Wireless Locations

The wireless network service is available at these locations. Departments are invited to propose locations within their respective buildings that could be equipped with wireless access points. Requests should be made through the Head of Department here.

Security Risks

The convenience associated with wireless hotspots also brings security risks. Users are therefore advised to use secure services/sites especially when transmitting personal data such as passwords, credit card numbers etc.

Secure services/sites include websites with addresses starting with https:// rather than http://

Apart from transmitting personal data through secure sites, users are strongly encouraged to maintain the security of their computer/s to the highest level possible.
