Only University students and staff may register for IBM SPSS courses organised by IT Services.


About the Course

This course is aimed at University staff & students registered with the University of Malta who already have a background of statistics and the use of IBM SPSS as a statistical tool. The main aim is to teach participants more advanced statistical analyses, and how IBM SPSS can help in analysing data efficiently. Course participants will learn how to perform simple and advanced tests on data using IBM SPSS. The only essential prerequisite is knowledge of the content covered in the IBM SPSS: Introduction course.

The tutor for the course will be Prof Liberato Camilleri.


Course Structure

The course consists of three sessions of 2 hours each.

Aspects of Hypothesis Testing

  • Null and alternative hypotheses
  • Type I and Type II errors
  • Level of significance and P-values

Testing the Normality Assumption

  • P-P plots and Q-Q plots
  • Kolmogorov Smirnov test

Parametric Tests

  • Pearson correlation
  • One Sample t-test
  • Paired Samples t-test
  • Two Independent Samples t-test
  • One-Way ANOVA
  • Two-Way ANOVA

Non-Parametric Tests

  • Spearman correlation
  • Binomial (Sign) test
  • Wilcoxon signed ranks test
  • Mann Whitney test
  • Kruskal Wallis test
  • Chi-Square test
  • Friedman

The course is intended to be a hands-on course, where a technique learnt will be applied to a case study. Further exercises will be available for the user who wants further practice.

Staff and students interested in attending this course are requested to register and pay online (refer to the next section).

The above course is organised subject to a minimum number of 9 participants.

Staff and students may request to be placed on the course waiting list if the above course is at a time which is inconvenient to them.

IT Services will inform them via email when the next course will be scheduled.


Course Registration

The course registration fee is €37.27. Please note that this fee has been kept to an absolute minimum and is necessary to cover tutoring costs. The fee does not include courseware which can be downloaded from our documentation page.

University staff and students are requested to register and pay online for the IBM SPSS Intermediate course.

The following payment methods are accepted:

  • Academic staff can use their personal Academic Work Resources Funds debit card or any other credit/debit card.
  • Students can use any credit/debit card.
  • Administrative, technical and industrial staff can authorise payment using any credit/debit card. They  may then apply for reimbursement of the course fee through the Work Resources Fund Committee. The Committee requires a letter of regular attendance before approving the reimbursement of the course fee. IT Services will issue such a letter.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come first-served basis. IT Services reserves the right not to proceed with a course in which case a full refund will be issued.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

  • IT Services will not issue refunds if applicants fail to attend full or part of the course.
  • IT Services reserves the right to cancel a course if the minimum number of participants is not reached. In such cases, the participants are given the opportunity to attend the next course or they will be refunded the full course registration fee.
Only University staff and students can register for courses organised by IT Services.
