NVivo is a software package for managing and analysing qualitative data, such as interview transcripts, field notes, images and videos.

The University has a site licence for NVivo software. The licence covers use of NVivo for academic purposes. The software is available only for University staff and students.

The current NVivo version available from IT Services is NVivo 11

System Requirements

NVivo 11 for Windows

  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 or later
  • Hardware: 1.2 GHz Pentium III-compatible processor (32-bit) or 1.4 GHz single-core processor (64-bit) or faster
  • Memory: 2GB RAM or more recommended
  • Minimum free drive space: 5GB (additional hard-disk space may be required for NVivo projects)
  • XGA (1024x768) or a higher-resolution monitor
  • Internet Connection
  • Browser: Internet Explorer 8 or Google Chrome 44 or later

NVivo 11 for Mac

  • Operating System: Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or higher
  • Hardware: Intel Core 2 Duo or higher
  • Memory: 2GB RAM
  • Minimum free drive space: 2GB or more recommended
  • Display 1280 x 800 or a higher-resolution monitor
  • Internet Connection
  • Google Chrome 44 or later


A charge is levied for every NVivo installation or licence code renewal.

6-month licence*€30.00
12-month licence*€60.00

*Licence period starts from date of activation.

Payment & Installation

Accepted payment methods to purchase new or renew NVivo license are listed below. For urgent requests contact IT Services Helpdesk.

  • Personal online payment – Staff and students can pay online using any accepted credit/debit card. Academic Work Resource Fund debit cards are also accepted. NVivo can be downloaded and activated using the unique licence key sent by email within one working day following the online payment.
  • Journal transfer payment – Departments are requested to send a completed Journal Request Form to IT Services Reception Desk to order NVivo. Following clearance of journal transfer, staff will be required to sign the NVivo academic licence terms & conditions. NVivo can be downloaded and activated using the unique licence key sent by email.

The charges indicated above cover NVivo upgrades released during the licence period. Information about new versions of NVivo will be made available on this web page. Upgrades may only be provided for licences having 3 or more months left before expiry.

Training & Self-Help Resources

IT Services will be organising NVivo training workshops for University staff and students. More details will be provided in due course.
