Comm. Prof. George Cassar B.A. (Educ.), M.Ed., Ph.D. is an associate professor of heritage and cultural tourism. After a long teaching career in State schools he joined the University of Malta as a full-time lecturer in 1995. He taught at the Junior College and occupied the posts of Subject Coordinator (Sociology) and Area Coordinator (Humanities) for many years. He has also lectured, coordinated courses and supervised dissertations in the Faculty of Education and now in the Institute for Tourism, Travel and Culture. He sat on the Junior College Board for many years and was also an elected staff representative on the University Council (2010-2012).

He is a historical sociologist and a pedagogist. Besides publishing extensively on History, Education, Social Studies, Sociology, Culture and Heritage, he is also editor of numerous books and journals. Prof. Cassar forms part of the committees of the History Teachers Association (Malta), Ħarsien Patrimonju Mosti, the Friends of the National Archives of Malta, the Malta Tourism Society, and the Sacra Militia Foundation. He has participated in a number of EU projects: Cultexchange, Archaeotur, Rebaca, Heland, Hisa, and Certess, in various capacities including that of project manager.

Awards received by Prof. Cassar are the ‘Ġieħ il-Mosta’ from the Mosta Local Council, the ‘Grazzi Badge’ from The Scouts Association of Malta, and the ‘Commendatore pro Merito Melitensi’ from the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Research interests include culture and heritage in all their aspects, the history and sociology of Maltese society; the pedagogy and andragogy of cultural heritage; and cultural tourism.
