DESCRIPTION Travel and travelogues will look at themes related to the basic concept of travel which is a basic component of the Institute for Tourism, Travel and Culture. It will look at changing views of travel over time including travel in the ancient world; Christian pilgrimages; Muslim pilgrimages; movements of people through colonization (ex. People moving away from Spain and Portugal to settle in Latin America, and people leaving France, Britain and the Netherlands to settle in Asia and Africa; Travelogues and travel writing in the Mediterranean and Europe; changing views to travel 1930-1970s; the age of cruise liners and the way forward. Malta and changing views about travel and tourism to modern times.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit is meant to provide a much needed solid overview of travel to tourism students, about the changing concept of travel through time and space.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the differences of travel;
- Formalise knowledge about the concept of travel and particularly for the reasons which induced people to travel through time;
- Discuss the different evidence made available;
- Present the interpretation of the evidence.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
- Be able to evaluate the idea of travel as a global phenomenon which grows, changes and adjusts to circumstances over time and space;
- Be able to assess the changing values and perceptions of travel over time and space;
- Be able to compare and analyse the differences and similarities of Mediterranean, European and global travel over time be it for leisure, religious reasons, work, or other specific reasons and how these change over time and space;
- Improve his/her skills in handling travel related issues and enable him/her to perceive travel with an open mind.
