Hannes Descamps obtained a Law Degree at Ghent University and started his career as a legal advisor in the International Environmental Policy Unit of the Department of Environment, Nature and Energy in 2000.  His main responsibility was the negotiation and implementation of the EU Directive on the Prevention and Remediation of Environmental Damage. He also acquired expertise in the areas of soil sanitation, nature conservation and financial securities.

From 2008 to 2010 he worked as a seconded national expert in the unit in the European Commission dealing with the international climate negotiations. Next, he served as adviser climate change to the Flemish Government during its Presidency of the Environment Council. Recently, he joined the Environmental Permitting unit working on the streamlining and integration of procedures.

At the same time, Hannes is active as consultant and affiliated scientific researcher at the Institute of Environmental and Energy Law of Leuven University. He publishes and lectures on a regular basis.
