DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers two topics: the Maltese Legal System and Prolegomena. It is intended to be an introductory study-unit which gives students a bird's eye view of the Maltese Legal System and of pertinent legal principles which are applied in all branches of the law including Criminal Law.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to introduce the Maltese Legal System to the student. This will provide grounding for further study-units offered in the Diploma in Policing. It will introduce them to the main legal concepts applicable in all branches of the law.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the component parts of the Maltese legal system;
- Understand the most important legal principles of the Maltese legal system;
- Recognize and find the sources of the Maltese legal system;
- Trace the historical evolution of the Maltese legal system from the period of the Romans till to date.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Write about the legal system;
- Write about legal principles;
- Research the law;
- Access legal sources without difficulty.
