These links were put together to assist patrons enrich their research experience. Since the Bighi Library collection focuses on Conservation and Restoration, the links offer a variety of information with regards to this discipline. However, these links are not just for conservators and restorers but also for anyone who is interested in cultural heritage and related subject areas.

 

AATA Online

AATA Online is a comprehensive database of over 120,000 abstracts of literature related to the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage.

Archives of the Archbishop of Malta (Archivium Archiepiscopale Melitense (A.A.M.)

The Archives of the Archbishop of Malta contain the diocesan records from 1531-1898 along with some miscellaneous items dating from 1450-1928. These documents are housed in Floriana. These archives also include the local Parish Archives which are located in their respective parish. These contain the baptism, confirmation, marriage and funeral records from 1555-1908. Original manuscripts are housed in the parishes. At the moment, not all Parish Archives have been digitized.

BBC Your Paintings

Your Paintings is a website which aims to show the entire UK national collection of oil paintings, the stories behind the paintings, and where to see them for real. It is made up of paintings from thousands of museums and other public institutions around the country.

British Museum

The British Museum was founded in 1753, the first national public museum in the world. From the beginning it granted free admission to all 'studious and curious persons'. Visitor numbers have grown from around 5,000 a year in the eighteenth century to nearly 6 million today.

CAMEO : Conservation & Art Material Encyclopaedia Online

CAMEO is a searchable information center developed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Materials database contains chemical, physical, visual, and analytical information on over 10,000 historic and contemporary materials used in the production and conservation of artistic, architectural, archaeological, and anthropological materials.

Classical Art Research Centre and The Beazley Archive

The Classical Art Research Centre leads and supports research on ancient art. At its heart is the Beazley Archive, which includes the world's largest collection of images of ancient figure-decorated pottery. The Beazley Archive's online databases and our other web resources are freely available through this site.

Conservation On-Line


CoOL, an online resource operated by the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation is a full text library of conservation information, covering a wide spectrum of topics of interest to those involved with the conservation of library, archives and museum materials. It is a growing online resource for conservators, collection care specialists, and other conservation professionals.

Din l-Art Ħelwa – National Trust of Malta

Din l-Art Ħelwa, National Trust of Malta, is a non-governmental, not-for-profit, voluntary organization founded in 1965 to safeguard the historic, artistic and natural heritage of Malta. Since its foundation, Din l-Art Ħelwa has restored and managed numerous cultural sites of immense historic and environmental importance.

E.C.C.O – European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers Organisations

Palazzo Falson

Palazzo Falson was the former home of Capt Olof Frederick Gollcher OBE (1889-1962), the son of a prosperous shipping merchant of Swedish descent. In 2001 Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti (Maltese Heritage Foundation) entered into a management agreement with the Gollcher Foundation, and proceeded to restore the palazzo and all its contents to their former glory, thus fulfilling Gollcher’s wish by bringing to the general public this unique and extraordinary treasure-trove.

The Cosmati Pavement at Westminster Abbey

The Cosmati pavement is a unique work of art but it is also a working floor surface within a busy church. This was one of the most significant factors informing the approach and involved a balance between conservation and restoration, adopting the minimum degree of intervention necessary to stabilise the pavement and to meet with the Dean and Chapter’s brief of a clean, stable and usable floor surface.
This website has all the conservation taking place documented in video clips filled with information.

The Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative

The Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI) represents the efforts of an international group of Assyriologists, museum curators and historians of science to make available through the internet the form and content of cuneiform tablets dating from the beginning of writing, ca. 3350 BC, until the end of the pre-Christian era. We estimate the number of these documents currently kept in public and private collections to exceed 500,000 exemplars, of which now nearly 270,000 have been catalogued in electronic form by the CDLI.

Wirt iż-Żejtun Archives

In this archive, there is gathered in digital format, a number of published articles about the cultural heritage of Zejtun. Most of these articles were published for the first time by the Żejtun Parish, the band clubs and other societies in the booklets they issue annually for the ocassion of the parish feast of St Catherine. All articles are in Maltese.
