Abstract: The Sacra Infermeria was the great hospital built in the sixteenth century by the Knights of Malta in Valletta, Malta. The Knights of Malta, also known as the Knights of the Hospital or the Hospitallers, were a military religious order established in Jerusalem before the First Crusade (1095-99). The Order, despite its military associations, has a long tradition of medical charities that continues to the present day. Its eighteenth-century medical archives and library are housed today in the National Library of Malta in Valletta. This chapter provides an introduction to the archives and the medical library of the Order of the Hospital
