Abstract: Throughout the centuries Malta has come in contact with various cultures. A long process of adaptation, assimilation and cross fertilisation of beliefs and usages drawn from various conflicting sources has resulted in a rich pattern of traditions, beliefs and practices that make the Maltese Islands a unique place for folklore research within the wider framework of Mediterranean civilizations. In this variegated pattern History and Folklore are as closely intertwined as are Folklore and Language.
