Abstract: Epidemic Meningococcal meningitis first made its definite appearance in Europe in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The first recorded epidemic in the Maltese Islands, which straddled the sea-routes of the Mediterranean, occurred in the late nineteenth century. This paper describes a manuscript report prepared at the request of the Lieutenant Governor regarding this epidemic in the light of the contemporary knowledge about the infection.
