Cultivating creativity through an educational intervention : a case study

Abstract

This instrumental case study is an evaluation of secondary Graphical Communication students’ engagement with creativity. It explores the perceptions of creativity of students and teachers and identifies the importance of creativity in education. Moreover, this study debates if creativity is a result of nature or nurture and how natural creativity can be developed within an education context. A resource pack was designed based on the literature reviewed and implemented within a local church school. Qualitative data was collected through observation, semi-structured interviews with teacher and focus groups with students. This study focused primarily on the implementation of creativity within the classroom and its application to self-cultivation. Manifestations of self-cultivation include selfconfidence, motivation, autonomy and academic achievements (Hammershoj, 2009). The findings were coherent with the literature reviewed and it was determined that creativity plays a very important role in enhancing the learning process transforming it into a more rational process. This case study may provide insights about the use of deductive approaches to learn through creative pedagogies, which can subsequently help to improve the current educational system.
