| Abstract: | This article discusses an epic poem written by a Spanish Knight of the Order of St. John, Hipolito Sans, titled La Maltea. In his poem, Sans recounts his experience during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The work is a fully-fledged epic poem built on the model of the classical tradition deriving from Virgil. The text itself is preceded by two sonnets, an epistola addressed to King Philip II of Spain (r. 1556-98) and a prologue addressed to the reader. |
