Abstract: Leg ulcers are a well-recognized complication of beta thalassaemia intermedia, occurring frequently in patients with untreated or poorly controlled disease (Weatherall & Clegg, 1981). Poor tissue repair may be owing, at least in part, to the poor oxygen delivery to the peripheral tissues resulting from the high oxygen affinity of haemoglobin F, which may comprise more than 50% of the total haemoglobin in these patients.
