| Abstract: | Many contemporaries recognized in Benedict XIV's pontificate between 1740 and 1758 a quality which has been recognized also by some later historians of the eighteenth-century Church. Prospero Lambertini, Archbishop of Bologna, was elected pope to his own surprise and that of his fellow cardinals in a six-month conclave during 1740, the longest in modern times. This choice was apposite for a Church which was soon to experience a triple challenge: the final implementation of Counter-Reformation reforms and the move toward a "Catholic Enlightenment" as well as the satirical thrusts of the philosophes and the regalian policies of the Bourbon monarchs, which would threaten the customary cement of throne, altar, and orthodox belief. |
