Abstract: | According to French (1993), independence is considered as something that disabled people desire above all else. Independent living enables a disabled person to live where they want, make their own decisions, have the same opportunities and be provided with levels of assistance (Evans, 2001). This research identifies the implications of independent living for physically disabled people in the context of Malta. Furthermore, this study explores the living experiences and implications that disabled people face pertaining to their financial and additional costs due to their impairments since they need to ask for assistance to perform certain tasks. A qualitative method was adopted for this research. Specifically, semi-structured one-to-one interviews were held with disabled people who have physical impairments and who are employed, some of whom are living independently. The participants were able to share their own experiences and difficulties they face on a daily basis. Results indicate that a disabled person in Malta does not find it easy to live an independent life, mainly because of the Maltese culture, religious beliefs, financial costs, accessibility, discrimination and stigma, particularly related to employment. Recommendations and conclusions based on the analysis of the established themes are provided for employers, policy makers, households and educators. These are believed to be feasible, relevant and grounded in the findings. |
