Abstract: This article deals with the edict of June 14, 1788 by Vincenzo Labini, bishop of Malta, about abortion. According to the author of the article, Labini's edict is the "Magna Carta in the defence of unborn life". In this edict, the bishop quoted the decrees of the Council of Elvira (4th century AD) : any woman who had procured her child's abortion, however repentant, was to be forever deprived of absolution. Labini's edict had to be published and explained to the people by all parish priests, and had to be given publicity each year, on the Sunday following the feast of the Holy Innocents.
