Abstract

This article discusses the life and works of Carlo Darmanin, known as one of the finest sculptors of late 19th century, Malta. His contributions to religious art remain fundamentally relevant to date, earning him the title as the ‘Prince’ of Maltese statuaries. Father Duncan’s piece begins by introducing us to his childhood in Senglea where the sculptor is first trained by his father, a marbler by trade. The article continues to study Darmanin’s adult life with an in-depth look at his artistic process, influences, and revolutionary style. The latter part of this piece navigates through the different localities that hold his most prominent works, with a focus on the titular statues created with papier-mâché’.
