Abstract: The aim of this study is to explore the nature of human attraction from the perspective of Maltese university students as compared to established literature in the field. It focuses on the perceived qualities that attract heterosexual men and women. I chose this particular theme not only because it resonates with me on a personal level but also to obtain an understanding of how other people of my age and background perceive attraction. Since my main interest are the collective qualities as a whole, I adopted the qualitative approach and thematic analysis which searches for common themes and patterns. Heterosexual university students of a particular age bracket were interviewed and the data collected produced the following themes: attraction to physical qualities and psychological qualities and values, attraction as influenced by culture and religion, attraction to similar or opposites and attraction variations in long and short-term relationships. One cannot help observing the influence of culture in the responses given by the interviewees suggesting that they could still be conditioned by tradition. This study could be used as a basis for further research on the way the Maltese in general, locally and living abroad, perceive attraction.
