Title: Informative and affective determinants of pro-innovative behaviours
Authors: Panasiewicz, Leszek
Abstract: PURPOSE: The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive analysis of those conditions
conducive to employee creativity, expressed in the development of ideas, as well as the
initiation and continuation of such activities, leading to the implementation of an innovative
solution.; DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The research was of a qualitative character, and was based
on interviewing the authors of those solutions which meet the assumed criteria.; FINDINGS: The research allowed us to identify the cognitive and affective determinants of the
creative processes and of their transformation into the implementation of innovative
solutions. The research has also shown the high importance of the process of organisational
knowledge, and the catalysing influence that the fact of acquiring knowledge from external
sources had on the creative processes themselves. The factors influencing the induction and
maintenance of the useful emotional state of the authors of the ideas are also indicated. The
emotions turned out to be important both for taking the initiative and for continuing the
process of implementing the idea in practice. The research also showed the specific role that
intrinsic and extrinsic motivation played in the initiation and implementation of the initiative.; PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The article indicates those organisational conditions which are
conducive to the development of ideas and to the taking of initiative to transform them into
innovative organisational solutions. The research also shows the role of both intrinsic and
extrinsic motivation in undertaking such creative and innovative activities. Attention is also
paid to the influence that the practices of the authors of the projects themselves in the field of
knowledge acquisition had on the dynamics of the innovation process.; ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The article focuses on the transformation of a result of the creative
process, namely, the idea of an individual employee, into an innovative organisational
process. As a result, such work combines the issues of individual creativity and
organisational innovation, which are usually discussed separately. It also helps us
understand the conditions necessary for the transformation of spontaneous ingenuity into
worthwhile solutions.

Title: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economic and financial situation of the micro and small enterprises from the construction and development industry in Poland
Authors: Paździor, Artur; Sokół, Marta; Styk, Aleksandra
Abstract: PURPOSE: The main purpose of the article was to assess the impact of the COVID-19
pandemic on the financial situation of micro and small enterprises in the construction and
development industry in Poland.; DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The research was conducted in February 2021 by means
of a survey on a group of 100 randomly selected, representative samples of micro and small
entrepreneurs from the construction and development industry in Poland. The survey
questionnaire was developed in the form of 15 record and substantive single or multiple
choice questions. Another method that was used for the research was the review and
analysis of bibliographic resources.; FINDINGS: The conducted research shows that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the
economic and financial situation of micro and small enterprises in Poland has deteriorated.
However, this was not only due to a reduction in demand. A large part of the problems
resulted from the disruption of material logistics chains, which contributed to problems
with access to professional equipment (fixed assets) and financial chains, which was
reflected in the growing concerns of entrepreneurs about the timely inflow of receivables
from recipients.; PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The pandemic, affecting almost all economic entities, destabilizes
their functioning and raises concerns about the future. Support in a more difficult situation
granted to entrepreneurs by the government may significantly burden the state budget, and
the resignation from investments may hinder economic growth. A significant drop in
demand for construction services and concerns about an increase in the prices of materials
and wages and salaries may lead to a price fight between entities. Due to the difficulty in
predicting the long-term effects of the pandemic, it seems necessary to apply for economic
protection outside traditional crisis management systems.; ORIGINALITY/VALUE: With the use of an original, authors' survey conducted on a
representative research sample, current issues were raised, concerning not only Poland,
but also the whole world.

Title: The use of accounting for financial management by small and medium enterprises in Poland
Authors: Surma-Syta, Anna; Majek, Adrian
Abstract: PURPOSE: The aim of the publication is to verify the use of information obtained from
accounting in business and financial management by small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
in Poland. As part of this objective, the main hypothesis was formulated that small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) largely rely on accounting information to manage their
assets and finances. Additionally, auxiliary hypotheses were put forward.; DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The literature review was carried out. The research tool
was a questionnaire addressed to a representative group of 150 randomly selected Polish
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The questionnaire survey was conducted in
January and February 2021. The questionnaire contained 21 single-choice and multiplechoice record and substantive questions using the Likert scale.; FINDINGS: The results of research show that 90% of the surveyed entities use data for
financial management. 75% of companies use them to improve the debt collection process.
Over 60% use this information when choosing the optimal sources of financing, incl.
subsidies from the European Union. Approximately 70% of entities use accounting
information to calculate the ROE, and more than 80% use it when analyzing and
undertaking investment activities.; PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Owners of businesses are aware that thanks to accounting
information they are able to make better decisions and manage their resources in a more
optimal way, use them more effectively for their own purposes and improve the processes
taking place in a given unit.; ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The processes and situations in which accounting data in the field of
financial management are most often used are described. This publication provides an
answer to what extent the theories from scientific literature find practical application in
real reality in the field of property and financial management. The conducted research can
be the basis for further analyzes of the importance of these data for companies in specific
situations.

Title: The impact of managers' competences upon the performance of small enterprises
Authors: Mieszajkina, Elena
Abstract: PURPOSE: The objective of the article is to present the results of the study pertaining to the
impact of competences of small enterprises' managers upon the enterprises' performance.; DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The review of available literature as well as empirical
studies were performed in order to arrive at the objective. This enabled an in-depth
examination of the subject matter. The review of literature enabled the methodology of the
study to be formed. The survey approach with the use of a questionnaire was applied in data
collection. The impact of the managers' competences upon the performance of the
enterprises was examined by means of structural equation modeling.; FINDINGS: The study expands knowledge in the field of small enterprises management. The
article revealed that the performance of such enterprises is affected by the competences of
the management. Based upon the review of literature, three types of competences were
distinguished. A list of competences, which takes the specific character of small businesses
into consideration, was developed for each of the types. The empirical study revealed that
managerial competences directly affect the performance of the enterprises. Such
competences are reinforced by specialized competences as well as personal and social
competences.; PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The results of the study may offer valuable information for small
enterprise owners. They may prove helpful in developing competence profiles and strategies
regarding the improvement of managers' competences. They may also be of use to
consultants offering trainings and advisory services for small businesses. The results of the
study are compelling and encourage further research.; ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The subject matter seems vital because insufficient competence level of
the management is believed to be one of the weaknesses of small enterprises. Usually, such
businesses are analyzed in relation to large enterprises or the entire MSME sector. The
current study pertains exclusively to small enterprises, which have the lowest development
capacity in the sector. Studies prove that the enhancement of the management's competences
may contribute to the improvement of business performance.
