Abstract: The goal of this project is to design an assistive multifunctional kitchen tool for
one-handed users. This report starts by discussing the different factors that drive
the loss of independency, and how this effects the daily task of meal preparation.
The goal of the final product design is to improve one’s mental and physical health
and to allow the user to regain their independence. This is done by firstly
identifying the design problem. The second design stage is to determine the
customer requirements and systematically transform them into product design
specifications. The final design stage allows for the creation of numerous viable
concepts and where one final model is scientifically selected through established
design tools. Further design enhancements are carried out in the embodiment
design stage. Throughout the whole design development, several decisions were
taken which led to the formation of the final product design, which in turn is the
solution to the initial design problem identified in the first stage.

Abstract: The main objective of this project is to create a product that will encourage
consumers to prepare their own meals in order to maintain a healthy eating
lifestyle and to inspire individuals to engage in pro-environmental behaviour in
their everyday lives. This is done through the development of a self-heating and
space-saving lunchbox prototype. Throughout the research the impact of
nutrition on human health, as well as barriers that make choosing the healthy
alternative challenging, were identified. This, along with the take-out food
industry’s negative environmental impact, revealed a design opportunity that
seemed ripe to be addressed. Keeping in mind the importance of hygiene that the
Covid-19 pandemic has clearly proven, the resultant prototype was designed to
assist individuals in maintaining personal hygiene practices as well as to heat up
one's healthy meal at an optimal temperature without the need of resorting to
community microwave ovens. In addition, considering the significant
environmental damage and waste management concerns caused by single-use
take-away products, users will be encouraged to reject unsustainable goods by
being provided and equipped with sustainable, reusable and space-saving cutlery
and lunchboxes. A smart material was employed to create an innovative solution
as well as to establish an emotional connection with consumers.

Title: The design of a modular compact irrigation system
Abstract: The main objective of this project is to offer a sustainable solution for home
gardens to promote pro-environmental behaviour, whilst diminishing the effect
of food deserts in urbanised communities where there is a lack of access to
nutritious yet affordable food. This is done through the development of a
prototype which will allow users to grow herbs and other plants, even in smaller
urban environments which would otherwise put a strain on available resources
like space and water. Overcoming this issue will positively contribute towards the
well-being of the user by promoting a healthier lifestyle, as well as encouraging
pro-environmental behaviour in the user’s everyday life. Throughout the
research, problems regarding nutrition which are introduced through rapid
urbanisation and smaller urban environments were quite evident. This, along
with the increase in health consciousness and trends which align with the users’
values, revealed a design opportunity keen to be addressed. Other factors which
are important to the consumers, such as compactness and ease of use, were
identified as imperative aspects that the design must align with. Therefore, the
resultant prototype makes use of several modules which fit together to create a
modular compact irrigation system. The implementation of a mini-dehumidification
system was used as a method of water generation applied to a
hydroponic system of growing plants.
