Abstract: This exhibition of 70 pamphlets from the
UM Library’s Archive collection aims to
bring to light the diverse nature of this
collection, consisting of pamphlets on a
wide variety of topics ranging from
accounts of maritime skirmishes during the
time of the Order of St. John, to scientific
papers and tourist guides printed in the
early 1900s, leaflets for catechesis, political
pamphlets calling for fairer conditions at
the hands of the colonial government and
debating the issue of the “language
question”, and a number of other topics of
interest. While most of the items on display
were printed in Malta it is of added interest
to note the range of languages used in
these slim publications - including Italian,
English, Portuguese, Spanish and earlier
un-standardised versions of written
Maltese.; Din l-esebizzjoni, li hi magħmula minn
sebgħin ktejjeb meħudin mill-kollezzjoni
tal-Arkivji tal-Librerija tal-Università ta’
Malta, għandha l-għan li titfa’ dawl fuq ilvarjetà
wiesgħa ta’ din il-kollezzjoni, li
tikkonsisti minn ktejbiet dwar suġġetti
diversi li jvarjaw minn informazzjoni fuq
ġlidiet marittimi matul iż-żmien tal-Ordni
ta’ San Ġwann, għal studji xjentifiċi u gwidi
għat-turisti, ipprintjati fil-bidu tas-seklu
dsatax, fuljetti għall-katekiżmu, ktejbiet
politiċi bl-għajta għal kundizzjonijiet aktar
ġusti mill-Gvern kolonjali, u dibattiti fuq ilkwistjoni
tal-lingwa, fost suġġetti ta’
interess oħrajn. Għad li ħafna minn dawn
il-pubblikazzjonijiet esebiti kienu
ppubblikati hawn Malta, wieħed jista’
jinnota li dawn inkitbu b’diversi lingwi -
fosthom bit-Taljan, bl-Ingliż, bil-Portugiż, bl-
Ispanjol u b’ortografija Maltija li ma kinitx
għadha ġiet standardizzata.

Title: PLAS nature photography study tour exhibition
Abstract: The Centre for the Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), in collaboration with the University of Malta Library, is organizing an exhibition featuring photographs taken by seven students who followed the ‘Nature Photography Study Tour’ (LAS3003) within the University’s Programme in the Liberal Arts and Sciences (PLAS). The exhibition, which will be set up in the University Library’s foyer, will be inaugurated on 8 February and will run through 18 March.

The photographs were taken in Sicily between the 12 and 14 June 2015. Coordinated by Mr Guido Bonett, who is also curating the exhibition, the study tour enabled the participants to experience and practice photography in conditions and habitats that are not typically found in the Maltese Islands.

The first outing was to Bosco di Malabotta, a nature reserve in Messina, considered to be one of the last remaining natural woodland in Sicily. This was followed by Rocche Dell’Argimusco, a site characterized by the rock formations found here and the surrounding meadows, which provided the group with plenty of opportunities to photograph various species of butterflies.

The second day saw the group travel to Syracuse to visit Riserva Naturale Pantalica - Valle Dell’Anapo, a UNESCO site. This impressive range of gorges, with waterfalls, lakes and streams, provided an adequate environment to photograph dragonflies, damselfies, wall lizards and a host of different flora.

The last day of the tour was spent exploring parts of the Mount Etna National Park in the province of Catania. The black stark landscape provided the group with extraordinary opportunities for landscape photography.
