Abstract: Din is-sena (2022) jaħbat egħluq il-125 sena minn
meta waslet f’Għawdex l-istatwa patronali ta’ Santa
Marija, meqjuma b’għożża u b’devozzjoni kbira
fil-Knisja Katidrali. Din l-istatwa waslet Għawdex
minn Ruma għall-aħħar ta’ Lulju tal-1897 u iżżażnet
għall-festa ta’ Santa Marija ta’ dik is-sena. Sa
mill-wasla tagħha, l-istatwa bdiet tissejjaħ “Santa
Marija ta’ Għawdex”.
Din l-istatwa tal-Assunta għandha ġrajja partikulari
- tista’ tgħid unika - fost dawk titulari l-oħra li nsibu
fil-Gżejjer Maltin. Mhux l-iskop tiegħi f’din il-kitba li
nagħti l-ġrajja kronoloġika tagħha tul dawn il-mija
u ħamsin sena. Hawn ser nagħti tagħrif dwar ilkuntest
storiku li fih waslet biex b’hekk wieħed
ikun jista’ jifhem aħjar kemm ġrajjiet din l-istatwa
ta’ Santa Marija huma tabilħaqq imxebilka fi ġrajjiet
l-istorja tal-Knisja Nisranija f’Għawdex.

Authors: Bezzina, Joseph
Abstract: In April 1876, Malta and Gozo were hosts to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII (1901-1910). His visit, between April 6 and 10, was the occasion of a multitude of manifestations. One of the best-organized events was a march-past with the participation of every town and village of Malta and Gozo. It was on this occasion that most of the emblems of Gozo were conceived.

Authors: Bezzina, Joseph
Abstract: A new Gozo began to take shape in the last quarter of the sixteenth
century. By the year 1575, the island had recovered to quite an
extent from the cataclysmic Great Siege of 1551. The population of the
island which from around 6000 before the Siege had fallen to a few
hundred in the following decade, was climbing steadily and was then
close to 2300. Agricultural activity was thriving again and commerce
made a slow recovery, with the result that the economy began heading
towards a revival.
