Abstract: Being called upon by the 3rd article of the fundamental statue of this Society to address its members on some subject relating to the general improvement of the community, I have selected, as the argument of this evening’s discourse, “The Necessity of Educating the People.” The Education Question is, without exception, the most important of all questions, whether it be looked at from the moral or intellectual, the social or political, point of view ; and I am fully persuaded that every friend of true progress cannot but feel the deepest concern in a subject, upon which mainly depend the happiness and prosperity of man, both here and hereafter...
