Title: Traduzzjoni mill-Ingliż għall-Malti ta’ ktejjeb dwar polza tal-assikurazzjoni ta’ vetturi bil-mutur u glossarju ta’ termini tekniċi relatati miegħu
Abstract: L-iskop ta’ din it-teżi hu li nistudja l-lingwa teknika li nsibu fil-qasam tal-assikurazzjoni ta’ vetturi bil-mutur. Dan għamiltu permezz ta’ traduzzjoni ta’ dokument importanti kif ukoll ta’ glossarju magħmul minn termini tekniċi relatati miegħu, b’konsultazzjoni mal-esperti u permezz ta’ riċerka intensiva. L-interess tiegħi beda meta bdejt naħdem fil-fergħa ta’ Birkirkara tal-Peak Insurance Brokers. Kont indunajt li kienu bosta l-klijenti li ma jifhmux il-verżjoni Ingliża tad-dokument li nkun ippreżentajtilhom. Għalhekk kien ilu jberren f’moħħi sabiex nagħmel xi tip ta’ xogħol fuq it-terminoloġija ta’ dan il-qasam, u meta kien wasal iż-żmien li nagħżel is-suġġett tat-teżi tiegħi għall-grad ta’ Master fit-traduzzjoni sibt ix-xoqqa f’moxtha. Għaldaqstant, mort infittex ħa nara x’hemm disponibbli dwaru bil-Malti u dlonk indunajt li kien hemm nuqqas kbir.
Għalhekk iddeċidejt nidħol għal dan it-tip ta’ traduzzjoni bi spjegazzjonijiet xierqa dwar il-proċess tagħha b’tali mod li tkun waħda annotata u analizzata. Xtaqt ukoll nagħżel dokument popolari ma’ kull min ikollu x’jaqsam mal-kumpaniji tal-assikurazzjoni. Dan sabiex nagħmel minn xogħli xi ħaġa kemm jista’ jkun utli. U ma kellix għax indum intella’ u nniżżel. F’Malta, skont l-Uffiċju Nazzjonali tal-Istatistika, sal-aħħar ta’ Marzu 2014 kien hawn 329 0531 vettura bil-mutur li l-assikurazzjoni tagħhom tinteressa lil madwar 245 1002 sewwieq u l-biċċa l-kbira minnhom huma Maltin li inkwantu għall-poloz tagħhom jiddependu esklussivament mill-ispjegazzjonijiet (bil-Malti) li jkun lest jagħtihom l-assikuratur bil-fomm. Ħaġa inġusta daqs kemm hi assurda. Lanqas ma ridt nieqaf hawn, għax bħal kull traduzzjoni għal skopijiet partikolari d-dokument magħżul dwar l-assikurazzjoni ta’ vetturi bil-mutur hu miżgħud b’termini speċifiċi li jolqtu l-qasam kollu. Għaldaqstant, ridt noħroġ dawn it-termini u nibni corpus fuq linji xjentifikament sodi li jinkludi d-deskrizzjoni, l-ekwivalenza (bil-varjanti fejn meħtieġ) u l-użu tat-termini fil-kuntest.
Dan il-corpus mela huwa mibni mit-termini tekniċi li ltqajt magħhom kemm fit-traduzzjoni kif ukoll fir-riċerka tiegħi u dan għandu jservi wkoll biex jgħin fil-konsistenza u l-effiċjenza ta’ traduzzjonijiet oħra li jittrattaw dan is-suġġett. Għandu jgħin ukoll lit-traduttur biex jagħraf jagħżel bejn il-varjanti li jiltaqa’ magħhom waqt li jkun qed jagħmel t-traduzzjoni ta’ xi dokument tekniku dwar l-assikurazzjoni. Bosta termini jiġu użati mhux biss speċifikament fl-assikurazzjoni ta’ vetturi bil-mutur iżda anke f’dawk ta’ tipi oħra, bħal pereżempju t-termini ‘primjum’, ‘eċċess’ u ‘polza’ li jiġu użati fl-oqsma kollha tal-assikurazzjoni. Ta’ min wieħed isemmi hawnhekk li l-udjenza fil-mira ta’ din it-teżi mhix biss it-tradutturi, iżda kull min b’xi mod jew ieħor jagħmel użu mil-lingwa tal-assikurazzjoni fix-xogħol u r-riċerka tiegħu.

Title: A glossary of terms (English-Maltese) related to printing
Abstract: As Malta reaches its tenth year anniversary of entry into the European Union we can reflect on the role of the translator and indeed the progress made. The translator’s work has introduced new terminology that not only helps in communication between experts, but also facilitates his own role. The interest of new students applying for the Translation, Terminology and Interpreting course at the University of Malta strongly increases the chance of more theses such as this one helping in the compilation of new glossaries within the local market.
The subject matter on which this thesis is based is that of printing. Its history can be traced back to the duplication of images by means of stamps. The printing press, an invaluable piece of equipment which long existed and still does in modern day society, is a truly indispensable invention as it is through its use that we find printing on almost every medium in today’s world.
This dissertation forms a collection of one hundred and fifty printing related terms, translated from English into Maltese. The printing industry is, without doubt, an extremely important sector both locally and internationally. Printing has brought about the introduction of a great variety of popular materials, such as many different versions of The Bible, various dictionaries, popular fashion magazines such as Vogue and daily newspapers, read by millions of people worldwide.
In Teresa Cabré’s opinion terminology is the most important characteristic of specialist communication as it differentiates between special language and the language in general. It is not only used to order thought, but also to transfer specialised knowledge in one or more languages. The ordering of thought and the conceptualisation represent the cognitive side of terminology, whilst the communicative side is represented by the transfer of knowledge.
Multiple sources, including bilingual dictionaries, were utilised in the collection and analysis of terminology presented in this dissertation. These resources were used in the best way possible to achieve concision, precision and clarity.
The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first of which covering the process in translation in relation with equivalence, technical translation and terminology. The second chapter presents an explanation of the methodology adopted in this research. It gives a description of the process followed in compiling the terminology of one hundred and fifty terms, their translation and their analysis. This is followed by Chapter 3, which is itself the glossary of terms. In this chapter, besides the translation of terms and their analysis, one can also find a definition in both English and Maltese together with a picture relating to each term. The final chapter concludes with a summary of observations made throughout the research, and provides details of what more could be done in the future, such as further research and workings on printing related material in bilingual cultures, particularly Maltese.

Title: A glossary of psychopathological terms and their characteristics
Authors: Attard, Cressida
Abstract: It has been established that maintaining a good mental health is essential to live a
happy and a healthy life. Many organisations around the world are doing their utmost
to promote the importance of improving mental health and the prevention of mental
illnesses. These organisations are working hard to remove the taboo which these
disorders tend to have, and they are also helping people suffering from mental
disorders to seek professional advice.
People around the world need terminology so that they can communicate in an
effective way. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is
the handbook used by health care professionals in the United States and much of the
world as the authoritative guide to the diagnosis of mental disorders. The progress
that is being made worldwide in the branch of psychopathology involves specific
terminology. The Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union works to
establish the standardisation of terms. The aim of this work is to analyse how Maltese
terminology can be established in this particular branch and what processes are being
used for terms to be created.
The first chapter of this work includes a literature review about theories of
terminology. It starts off by giving a definition and explaining the differences
between terminography and lexicography. It continues by studying the importance of
standardisation and the absence of ambiguity, while looking at the work that is being
done by the translators and terminologists of the European Union in this field and the
use of ISO Standards.
The second chapter explains the methodology of this study. This will look closely
into the aims of this study, the choice of the Source Language terms taken from the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) IV-TR and the
formation and analysis of the chosen Target Language terms. This will show which
processes have been used in the establishment of psychopathological terminology in
this study. Ultimately, it will present the structure of this glossary.
The third chapter is the glossary itself. It will include an adequate analysis of the
terminology in both languages and new terminology will be created, where necessary,
according to the established processes and other term-formation models. Throughout
this process, it is crucial to seek the help of professionals in the psychopathological
field.

Title: A translation of some of the fundamental biological terms and definitions
Abstract: This dissertation is a translation of some of the fundamental biological terms and their definitions
taken from the Biology dictionary used in schools - Complete A-Z biology handbook by Bill Indge.
The terms used in this dissertation were chosen by the help of Dr. Sandro Lanfranco.
The aim of this dissertation is to increase the resources in the scientific and technical aspect in the
Maltese language. The first part of the dissertation discusses scientific and technical translations.
This also includes some theorists which talk about scientific and technical translations and also
their theories and their views. In this part, there is also the discussion of cultural translation; how
culture affects the translation. The translator has to adapt the translation according to the culture of
the target language. It also discusses the problems in scientific translation.
The second part of the dissertation presents the main translation of the terms and their definitions
which are related to Biology. This part also includes some comments from the translator in the
form of footnotes. In these footnotes, the translator analyses the translation and in the third part,
these footnotes are summarised altogether. From this dissertation, one can see how the Maltese
language can be interesting when it comes to the scientific language.
