Title: A survey of the management of band club archives in Malta and Gozo
Abstract: This study deals with the management of archives in band clubs. In Malta and Gozo there are in total ninety band clubs which are non-profit organisations and are administered by a committee. Band clubs nowadays do not only host a band but also own other components such as a fireworks factory, and street decorations. Band clubs form a core element in the Maltese society. External feast celebrations are mainly organised by the band club. Evidently, such clubs generate a considerable amount of records due to their importance in society. Thus, the management of band club archives in Malta and Gozo was a subject worth of research as it has never been studied before.
The purpose of the research was to examine and analyse in detail how records in band clubs are being acquired, preserved, retrieved, and accessed. Four main areas were studied: Accession tackled the acquisition of records, Preservation analysed ways that were used to preserve the records, Finding Aids examined tools to facilitate the retrieval of information within the collections and, Accessibility researched the characteristic methods adopted by band clubs to access the collections.
A qualitative research method was applied. The data retrieved is demonstrated through a number of tables including comparisons between questions, timelines and districts to fully exhibit similarities and differences between band clubs. The outcome of this research is compiled in the form of recommendations in Chapter 8 and also in a handbook. Through the conducted research it is possible now to advise band clubs to appoint a distinctive records manager for the administrative collection. Also, it is now possible to recommend that all records should be kept within the band club’s premises and that a back-up of every record is kept in a different location within the band club. The recommendations are purposely tailored for band clubs, are feasible, and cost-effective. The measures proposed, if adopted, are meant to give an impetus to, and considerably improve the management of records in band clubs.

Title: An index of the Grand Criminal Court of Justice cases, 1845-1850 : a listing and analysis of this collection in the custody of the Legal Documentation Centre (National Archives of Malta)
Abstract: In 1986, the Banca Giuratale was restored and refurbished, and it was taken over by the
Libraries and Archives Department to form part of the project to organise and develop the
National Archives of Malta. It was officially inaugurated on 28 October 1988 by the then
Minister of Education Dott. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici. Therefore the records (i.e. between the
years 1814-1899) of the Grand Criminal Court (GCR) are held at the Legal Documentation
Centre in Mdina. This Centre is today an extension of the National Archives of Malta. These
legal records are open for research, but no suitable index of their contents exists. The purpose
of this long essay is to present the importance of these documents for both historical and legal
research, and provide researchers with a useful finding aid to browse these records in a
professional way. It was impossible to go through the whole collection; therefore a limit had
to be set for the number of files to be included in this work. The part of the collection
described in this long essay represents the years between 1845 and 1850. This study will also
include a historic-legal overview of the period under study; an archival and preservation
analysis of the collection examined; and a thorough study aided with statistics of the Index
done for the chosen period. At completion, my work will be presented in print format with
attached a digital copy of the database of the Index in question for quick browsing.

Title: The NAG : National Archives Gozo. 25 years in the making
Abstract: The National Archives (Gozo Section)▪NAG is relatively new. It has been set up
twenty six years ago, but the first documents within the archive date to the 1560s. The need
for setting up an archive to hold Gozo’s most vital documents has been brought up many
times in the past.
Before the actual running of the archive, people had only one main source of
information, which was ‘The Gozo Public Library’. In fact, the first fond to be deposited
in the archive was the ‘Universitas Gaudisii’ that was available for the public in the
reference section of the ‘Gozo Public Library’ from the early 1950 s. The mentioned section
is the oldest and first group of documents that the ‘National Archives (Gozo Section)’
acquired. These records consist of the registers of the medieval government of Gozo.
Although this fond was catalogued in several sections, it was not done in the most
professional way. Putting apart that a progressive numeration was used, it was found that
there was a mix up of different volumes that have been catalogued in the wrong sections.
Fortunately enough, these documents were found to be in an acceptable state of
preservation.
The second batch of volumes acquired by this archive were the ‘Government
Secretariat’ records. This was the body that took the reins of Gozo from the ‘Universitas
Gaudisii’. These documents were held in the former premises of the ‘Gozo Secretariat’, in
Republic Street, in Victoria, Gozo. This section consisted in more than 800 volumes in no order what so ever. Due to this fact, these documents were never available for researchers
and the public for consultation. Unfortunately, most of the volumes were burned and the
remaining existing ones are only a fraction of the whole reality. Also, they were kept in a
bad preservative state. Each single document had to be patiently cleaned, and where
possible, volumes were grouped together.
Another vital part of the Archives consists of the documents pertaining to the ‘Gozo
Law Courts’. These volumes were kept at the ‘Courts Archives’ in Victoria. Due to lack of
space, these were immediately transferred to the newly-founded archives. The material
brought at the archives was found to be in an outstanding condition. While it was still being
kept at the ‘Gozo Law Courts Archives Section’, all the volumes were available to the
public. One however notes that the volumes were all catalogued.

Title: Analysis of the effects of the National Archives Act 2005 on the Maltese government’s records management
Abstract: A considerably long time has passed since the publication of the National Archives Act of 2005 and it is within reason to ask to what extent has this Act been adhered to, particularly within the Maltese Government’s Public Administration? A corollary question would inquire whether adherence to this Act has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of our public records management systems. This long essay aims to discuss these issues.
Records are evidence and information gathered and kept by an organization, enabling it to function properly, besides supporting its accountability. Keeping records is a challenging task since records need to be managed and taken care of from their creation till their disposal or archival disposition.
This study examines the present situation of the records’ management in the Maltese Government’s Public Administration and discusses the way forward to implement the National Archives Act, ensuring the best practice of records keeping in our Public Administration.
