Abstract: This study aims at investigating the perceptions of pre-service teachers&#xD;
regarding effective teaching and effective teachers. The following research&#xD;
questions were addressed for this purpose: What are the dimensions of effective&#xD;
teaching? What are the characteristics of an effective teacher? The study is&#xD;
composed of two parts: a literature review, and empirical research. A&#xD;
questionnaire consisting of four open-ended questions was administered to 153&#xD;
pre-service teachers. Some findings are briefly discussed, including the key fact&#xD;
that pre-service teachers believe that the pedagogical skills of professional&#xD;
teachers should take precedence over the improvement of their theoretical&#xD;
knowledge of their subject matter.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: Relationships among self-regulated learning components, motivational beliefs and computer programming achievement in an online learning environment

Abstract: This study analyzed relationships among motivational beliefs&#xD;
(intrinsic goal orientation, extrinsic goal orientation, control beliefs, task value,&#xD;
self-efficacy, and test anxiety), self-regulated learning components (cognitive&#xD;
strategy use, self-regulation) and computer programming achievement in an&#xD;
online learning environment. The study consisted of 38 participants from an&#xD;
online Information Technologies Certificate Program which is based on&#xD;
synchronous and asynchronous communication methods over the Internet. Data&#xD;
are gathered from two consecutive online computer programming courses in this&#xD;
online certificate program, where the second course followed the first one in&#xD;
content as well. Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was&#xD;
used to collect relevant data. The results of the study indicated that the effect of&#xD;
self-efficacy variable on students’ programming achievement was statistically&#xD;
significant in the first course and the effect of self-regulation variable on students’&#xD;
programming achievement was statistically significant in the second course.</summary>

    <summary type="text">Title: The Pontian family from the former USSR in Greece : a comparative study

Abstract: The aim of the present comparative study is to find out whether there&#xD;
are any differences in self-esteem between Pontian and Greek students at the 6th&#xD;
Grade level. Pontians are a particular type of immigrant in the sense that they are&#xD;
in fact ‘re-patriated’: they are Greeks whose ancestors lived around Pontos in the&#xD;
Black Sea area during the seventh century before Christ. They moved to the&#xD;
interior of the ex-Soviet Union in 1916, and then returned to Greece in 1986.&#xD;
Although Pontians share a common history, religion, and several cultural&#xD;
elements with the Greeks, ‘natives’ regard them as ‘foreigners’ and as a result&#xD;
they are a marginalized population in Greece. This study set out to analyse the&#xD;
self-concept of a total sample of 1558 students attending 6th Grade. 552 of these&#xD;
students were Pontian immigrants, 864 were native Greeks while 172 were&#xD;
Pontian natives. The results of the present research lead us to conclude that there&#xD;
is a statistically significant difference in the self-concept between the Pontian and&#xD;
Greek population. It also seems that the marginalized immigrant family, whether&#xD;
belonging to the same ethnic group or not, comprises a population at risk as far&#xD;
as the self-concept of the children is concerned.</summary>
