Authors: Hughes, G. W. G.; Hughes, M. H.
Abstract: The centenary of the birth of Matthew Louis Hughes passed without comment in 1967, but the occasion of the Clinical Meeting of the British Medical Association in Malta in 1969 makes the time an appropriate one to repair the omission. M. L. Hughes' classic monograph on undulant fever was the fruit of his experience as a young Army Medical Officer in Malta and it has won for him a permanent place in medical history.</summary>

Authors: Cachia, E. A.; Fenech, F. F.
Abstract: The first operation for congenital pyloric stenosis in Malta was carried out in 1949. Up to that time it was thought that this disease did not exist locally. However, an increasing number of cases have been diagnosed since then: presumably this is due to more accurate diagnosis and to the fact that doctors have become more aware of its existence. The purpose of this paper is to review the incidence of congenital pyloric stenosis in Malta as well as to compare this incidence to that of other countries.</summary>

Authors: Cook, Gordon C.
Abstract: David Bruce (1855–1931; Figure 9.1) made significant contributions regarding brucellosis (in Malta), nagana (in Zululand), and east African trypanosomiasis (in Uganda). In all of these ventures he was accompanied by a fellow-worker – his wife, formerly Mary Elizabeth Steele (1849–1931). Bruce was born in Melbourne, Australia, of Scottish parents. At six years of age he travelled to Scotland, and was educated at Stirling High School. At seventeen he joined the business world, but shortly afterwards entered Edinburgh University and graduated MB CM in 1881. As well as being a keen and accomplished sportsman (he excelled at boxing), he had an enthusiastic interest in natural history. Following a brief period in general practice he entered the Army Medical School at Netley, where his major interests were in pathology and research in that discipline.</summary>
