Title: Risk management practices in the Maltese gaming industry : a comparative approach
Abstract: Purpose: The scope of this research is to shed light on what types of risk management
strategies, if any, are implemented by gaming companies within the local sphere. These, in
turn are compared to the study conducted by Dr. Frank Bezzina, Dr. Simon Grima, and Ms.
Josephine Mamo (2014), titled Risk Management Practices adopted by Financial Firms in
Malta. The research is divided into four themes. First and foremost, the researcher wants to
identify those risk management practices gaming companies adopt in order to mitigate risks,
get the most out of opportunities, and uphold financial stability. Secondly, this study wants to
ascertain whether such risk management practices are seen as part of principled performance
or otherwise. The third theme focuses on whether risk management strategies offer
competitive advantage. The last theme revolves around corporate social responsibility, and
whether this is one of the main drivers of risk management strategies within the organisation.
Three other themes were put forward by the current researcher, including financial risk,
strategic risk, and legal/ethical risk.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A questionnaire compiled by Bezzina et al., (2014) was
utilised and adopted as a structured interview for the purpose of this research. This was
disseminated among thirty-two local gaming companies, including both large and smaller
firms. All these gaming corporations are listed on the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA)
website. Globally, fourteen Maltese gaming companies partook in the research and the results
were compared to the study conducted by Bezzina et al., (2014), in order to respond to the
four research questions.
Findings: After comparing results from the study conducted by Bezzina et al., (2014) and the
current research, it could be seen that both industries adopt risk management practices. This
was further outlined in the ‘financial risk’ and ‘strategic risk’ themes. A link between
principled performance and risk management also prevailed. Competitive advantage was not
seen as a priority in both studies. Notwithstanding this, competitiveness is still important to
the gaming industry, as the latter strives to increase its economic and profitable growth.
Corporate social responsibility also forms part of the risk management strategies, both within
the financial and the gaming industries.

Title: A study of the main contributors to the development of the insurance industry in Malta
Abstract: Insurance is one of the largest sectors of the financial services industry in Malta and one of the three
major pillars of the Maltese Economy. The industry draws itself from the earliest inhabitants of the
island having its roots set in maritime trade.
Despite this, whereas there is an abundance of literature and documentation revolving around
maritime trade in Malta, there is a lack of research and literature pertaining directly to insurance in
Malta. This is due to the fact that most historical records found by the author hinge on the maritime
history and the historical accounts of the ports and port activity.
Reference to insurance in Malta can be traced back as early as 750 B.C at the time of the
Phoenicians, with the earliest insurance contract dating as early as 1536. Intra and Extra-territorial
socio-political, economic and regulatory events have strongly contributed to the development of
Insurance and have forged it into the industry it is today.
Suffice it to say, there exists no empirical literature that actively and directly chronicles the key
contributors and events that were paramount to the industry’s development in Malta.
This study seeks to deliver a case study of the development of insurance in Malta based on empirical
literature findings, archival research and semi-structured interviews with keynote individuals whom
have all played active parts in the recent developments.

Title: Determining the need for an integrated football club insurance policy : a case study on Malta
Abstract: Football is without doubt the most popular sports in Malta. Local football clubs are
comparatively small when compared to overseas clubs, but nonetheless still command a
considerable following by the locals. However, as a result of being so small, the majority of local
football clubs are faced with an uphill struggle each day, especially when it comes to finances.
This research study first of all seeks to determine what level of insurance coverage do local
football clubs who compete in the top two levels of Maltese football currently have. In addition,
this study ultimately seeks to determine whether or not there is a need for a football-specific
integrated insurance policy to be introduced in Malta.
In order to carry out this research, two separate survey questionnaires with different
questions were distributed to both local football clubs who compete in the top two divisions of
Maltese football as well the local general insurance companies.
What this study established, was the fact that although there are a lot of Maltese football
clubs which currently have some kind of insurance coverage, in majority this insurance does not
cover all the risks that such a football club faces, and thus one can say that the majority of
Maltese football clubs are not adequately covered. Moreover, this study also established that
although there is a general interest in the aforementioned integrated insurance policy which
covers every aspect of a local football club, local firms are reluctant to offer such a policy as
they are afraid that due to their general lack of finances, local clubs won’t able to sustain the
annual insurance premium that such a policy would require.
Finally, one can say that all research conducted suggests that the only possibilities for such
an integrated insurance policy to start being offered and demanded in Malta, would be if either the local football clubs had to expand and have better finances or if the Malta Football
Association had to make having insurance coverage, compulsory for all Maltese football clubs.

Title: A study identifying the important risk factors in the gaming industry in Malta
Abstract: Gaming has become a key industry in Malta, so much so that it has become an industry leader
in Europe in the past few years. This is due to Malta’s attractive tax system and additional
benefits to this industry. Therefore, this research study is aimed towards gaming companies to
identify which risks are likely to affect them, and which of these risks are most important. Risk is
faced by every company, and this study will identify which risks are of most burden to local
gaming companies.
In order to carry out this dissertation, a series of questionnaires were sent out to local gaming
companies. These questionnaires were addressed to personnel within the company who are in
charge of the day to day operations of the company, or are involved with the mitigation of risk of
local gaming companies.
The research established that local gaming companies find that changes in legislations, both
Maltese and EU, are the most significant risks in the local gaming industry, with the latter being
of more significance. The research also concluded that in spite of these risks being of severe
nature, local gaming companies are ready to take on these risks, no matter how consequential
they end up being.
Whilst changes in legislation were the most noteworthy risks, being also classified as the most
important, they were not the only ones which are a burden to the gaming industry. Foreign
competition, cyber risks and the emergence of online gaming were also deemed to be
significant risk to Maltese gaming providers.
Despite these risks, Malta continues to grow in the gaming industry. It is one of the biggest
industries of the Maltese economy, and the number one destination in Europe to set up a
gaming company.
