Authors: Vassallo, Mario
Abstract: This paper examines how local authorities and voluntary organisations can
be effective in disseminating and implementing substance abuse prevention
programmes. It also addresses the importance of including all stakeholders
at the community level in decision making, defines the line of action to be
adopted by local institutions and examines how such action should be administered
in the best interests of society.

Authors: Fenech, Michael
Abstract: This paper provides a background against which preventive media campaigns
can be evaluated. The role of TV in media campaigns, with a particular
focus on programmes aimed at children, is discussed. The author also proposes
a local, children's TV production, 'OWKEJ!', as an example of media
use in preventive campaigns. The declared aims of the programme and the
producers' interpretations of these aims are examined in light of the precept
that children's TV can be a powerful tool in the service of preventive media
campaign planners and implementers. Finally, potential developments in
the media are considered.

Abstract: This paper reviews the use of Methadone, Clonidine and Naltrexone, medication
widely employed in the treatment of substance abuse. Research from
abroad, together with the authors' experiences has led to the identification
of specific indicators for the use of Naltrexone as an adjunct to a more
comprehensive treatment programme. These indicators are outlined and the
treatment phases explored.

Title: The role of professionals in primary prevention strategies : the pharmacist model
Authors: Sant Fournier, Mary Ann
Abstract: Whilst medical primary prevention programmes involve technical interventions
against certain diseases (for example, immunisation), substance abuse
is more complex. Measures taken must be holistic in their approach - addressing
the whole person in various environments. That professionals should
be involved in the primary prevention of substance abuse is acknowledged.
The question remains "what is meant by the term 'professional' and which
professionals should be involved?" This paper examines these issues and
also proposes that pharmacists' practice of, and research in, substance abuse
prevention is a suitable model for the multidisciplinary interventions of other
professionals in this field.
