Authors: Erdol, Cevdet; Ozturk, Cihadiye; Ocal, Arslan; Bozat, Tahsin; Ozdemir, Ahmet; Koca, Vedat
Abstract: Cardiac myxomas are the most frequent cardiac tumors, and they have the capability
for recurrence years after resection, in the same or in different cardiac chambers.
Hence, follow-up is important. Contralateral recurrences of myxoma are uncommon.
We report a 7 year old boy who had a right atrial myxoma resected, and who had
recurrent myxoma in the left atrium. The literature regarding such recurrence is
reviewed.

Authors: Bianca, Sebastiano; Ettore, Giuseppe
Abstract: A significant bias in sex ratio has been documented for several congenital cardiac
malformations. Transposition of the great arteries has been associated with a such a
bias but no explanation has been proposed for this bias. There was the evaluation of 95 isolated livebirths with transposition of the great arteries cases referred to the Sicilian Registry of Congenital Malformations from 1991 to 1998. A statistically significant
male bias of 2.8 was found and this was significantly associated with both maternal and paternal occupational exposure to agricultural chemicals for male infants with transposition, but not for female infants. This study raises new questions about the possible role played by environmental chemicals in relationship to birth defects and to sex ratio imbalance.

Title: Paediatric practice in the 21st century
Abstract: Editorial regarding the rollercoaster of medical progress. If it were to continue at the same rate as it did in the last century of the previous millennium, then we can expect nothing short of a further revolution in improved healthcare for children in the 21st century. Indeed, we may continue to witness the total eradication of some diseases, particularly
infections, definitive cure for some currently incurable conditions such as some types
of cancer, and effective control of presently untreatable disorders, notably those with
a predominantly genetic basis. Reference to the advent of computer technology that has played a pivotal role in the great strides made in medicine, both by the bedside and in the investigative, therapeutic and research field. Ethically acceptable guidelines must continue to assume an important role in the governance of medical practice and research.
