Title: The implications of climate change for tourism in small islands
Authors: Wall, Geoffrey
Abstract: Many small islands, particularly those in the tropics, rely heavily upon
natural resources of sea, sun and sand as the attractions upon which their
tourism industries are based. However, global climate change, including
ozone depletion, may modify these resources and how they are perceived by
the potential clientele, leading to the need for such destinations to adjust to
changing circumstances. It will be argued that, with respect to climate, the
past may no longer be an adequate guide to the future and that climate
change may be one factor among many worthy of inclusion in tourism
planning and investment decisions. Given this context, the purpose of this
chapter is: 1. To indicate the state of scientific knowledge concerning global climate
change. 2. To examine the implications of such change for small island destinations.
3. To comment upon the possible consequences of ozone depletion for tourism.
4. To assess the extent to which tourists and tourism businesses can adapt to
climate change.

Abstract: In trying to determine the opportunities and limitations of visitor management
it has to be recognized that, like many of the terms and phrases which
occur in the tourism literature, visitor management lacks convenient definition.
In general we might suggest that it is an approach which seeks:1. To protect and ideally enhance the resource, be it natural or cultural, which draws visitors to a particular location. 2. To maintain and improve the economic benefits which tourism can bring. 3. To assist visitors in enjoying their visit.

Authors: Archer, Brian
Abstract: So far economists have contributed relatively little to the debate on sustainable
tourism and have emerged with little kudos for their part in the
development of tourism. Indeed, it is easy to cast them together with
developers as the villains of the act in that they have provided theoretical,
conceptual and mathematical justifications for past growth and development
without adequate regard to the environmental and socio-cultural consequences
of their recommendations.

Title: Island states and the problems of mass tourism
Authors: Davies, Brian
Abstract: During the last few decades tourism has moved towards the forefront of
environmental, cultural and social concerns on a global scale. The magnitude
and intensity of visitors able and willing to visit all corners of the earth has
resulted in tourism being regarded as a seriously destructive power. Congestion,
noise, litter, environmental deterioration and cultural degradation are
some examples of suggested outcomes of tourism.
Advances in technology, increases in personal disposable income and
educational influences have created the opportunities for considerable numbers
to travel to areas which were previously within the reach of mainly high
socio-economic groups or were totally inaccessible due to the lack of development
and infrastructure. This shift to large volumes of tourists and the
ability to reach almost any destination have paved the way to suggestions
that mass tourism creates such damage.
